AG: Ma ci sono artisti che stanno iniziando a piegarsi a quelle che sentono come “pressioni del mercato” e che usano la loro net art come una sorta di strumento di marketing, un modo per accrescere la loro visibilità così che poi possono provare a rivendere oggetti reali che sono in qualche modo connessi alla loro pratica net artistica! È un camminare all’indietro, o cosa?
MA: Ah, sì, la stampa digitale di un certificato o di un’azione di una finta net.art company, un piccolo schizzo che mostra il “processo mentale” dell’artista mentre progetta cognitivamente il sito, una miniscultura del codice html incastonato nel cemento per 500 dollari. Dannazione, presto avremo dipinti espressionistici astratti di video arte che cercano di “rappresentare” fedelmente la realtà della rete! Come i VERI artisti! Tutto sarà di nuovo VERO!

Society of the Instance

My investigation must therefore begin with the analysis of a software instance, and the process of instantiation into an (objectless) "object" (little unit of distributed artificial intelligence) of what is known in the theory and cultural practice of object-oriented programming as a software class.

Seeing Cyberspace: The Electrical Infrastructure is Architecture

Through architectural language, one can see the otherwise intangible Cyberspace materialized in the power, media, and technological systems of the Electrical Infrastructure. In so doing, pressing issues such as war, energy inefficiency, global warming, pollution, and economic instability can be structurally related to the seemingly separate experience online the Internet. Identifying this relationship can help to educate and organize citizens whom want to address common yet otherwise ignored needs of the representative human public.

Science Must Push Copyright Aside

Many journal publishers appear to believe that the purpose of scientific literature is to enable them to publish journals so as to collect subscriptions from scientists and students. Such thinking is known as 'confusion of the means with the ends'. Their approach has been to restrict access even to read the scientific literature to those who can and will pay for it. They use copyright law, which is still in force despite its inappropriateness for computer networks, as an excuse to stop scientists from choosing new rules. For the sake of scientific cooperation and humanity's future, we must reject that approach at its root - not merely the obstructive systems that have been instituted, but the mistaken priorities that inspired them.

Libertà d'espressione dei Net-cittadini e Internet Blocking. Certi limiti da non sottovalutare

Le sfide portate dai Governi alla libera circolazione di idee in Internet si giocano su tre tavoli. Il primo riguarda la difesa della libertà d'espressione in Internet. [...] Una seconda sfida riguarda la libertà di pubblicazione. Per anni è stato un gioco da ragazzi aprire il proprio sito personale, avviare con entusiasmo la newsletter della nostra associazione culturale o un newsgroup dove condividere barzellette, o discussioni tematiche sul signor Rothbard, o per protestare contro la globalizzazione. [...] La terza sfida riguarda la nostra libertà di usufruire in maniera totale delle informazioni offerte in Internet. Il motivo si chiama Internet blocking. Si tratta di un meccanismo software che permette di classificare il contenuto di pagine Internet con il proposito di filtrarle e quindi diminuire l'accessibilità a determinati tipi di contenuti.
